SANTANA DO LIVRAMENTO, BRAZIL / 2011
This commission for the Federal University of Pampa was won the 3rd prize in an open national design competition. The new building is aligned to existing campus buildings. It creates a new courtyard as a central element of connection amongst all buildings. The administration and service facilities are now located in the spare space of the old building. The building is designed in a modular way, from the layout of spaces to its structure.
Accommodating a 400-seat auditorium, the 4,900 m² building makes use of its roof form to collect rain water into a basin. The water recycle system is driven by a solar photovoltaic cells roof. Local stone finish and local wood planks used as louvers are incorporated into exposed concrete, referencing the materiality and context of the site. Universal accessibility is guaranteed throughout the new building and connections are created to ensure accessibility to the existing buildings.
